January is noisy, it asks us to ACT FAST, it pushes us straight into action… targets, goals, to-do lists, bigger IS better. That New Year, New You vibe going on.
…even if we are old enough to know better …
… and that many habits don’t last past 15th January, let alone 31st January …
The social-media-life suggests we need to…
- Refocus on our business to scale up …
- Whilst getting into shape, probably for a marathon or mountain climb …
- Whilst being present in the moment with family and friends …
- Daily cooking more meals from scratch …
- And for goodness sake remember your journaling and breathwork
But let’s be honest.
Most owner-managed businesses don’t lack effort.
You’re working hard. The team is busy.
Clients are being looked after. Revenue might even be growing.
But effort without direction eventually turns into frustration.
Busy feels productive… until it doesn’t
You end up asking things like:
❌ Why does this still feel so heavy?
❌ Why am I working this hard for this level of reward?
❌ Why do decisions feel harder than they should?
The uncomfortable truth is this… If you haven’t defined where you’re heading, every decision becomes harder than it needs to be.
Most business owners don’t struggle because they’re lazy, disorganised or bad with money.
They struggle because they’re busy without being clear on where they’re heading.
And busyness, on its own, is a terrible compass.
January is the right time to pause
Whilst we want to make a strong start to the year by the middle of January it often takes a funny turn, patterns start to repeat (again & again)…. You slow down just enough to notice the questions you’ve been pushing aside for another year.
Not the tactical ones. The bigger, quieter ones.
➤ Am I actually enjoying this?
➤ Is the business doing what I want it to do?
➤ Are we where we intended to be?
➤ If nothing changed this year… would I be happy?
For many business owners the reflection that the end of year and January brings, can be an opportunity to really take stock, IF they take the time to pause and be intentional.
Direction isn’t about big goals or vision boards.
When we talk about direction, we’re not talking about:
❌ Flashy growth targets
❌ Five-year plans that never get looked at again
❌ Generic “scale the business” statements
Direction is quieter than that. Direction is knowing…
⭐ What you actually want this business to give you?
⭐ What success looks like for you personally and commercially?
⭐ What “enough” means… in money, time and pressure?
Without that clarity, numbers don’t help. They just give you more information to feel conflicted about.
Let’s talk about “enough”
This is one of the hardest conversations business owners avoid.
Not because they don’t care… but because they’ve never been asked to define it properly.
Enough income?
Enough profit?
Enough time of?
Enough stress and pressure?
If you can’t define “enough”, the business will always ask for more.
More hours.
More responsibility.
More mental load.
And that’s how people end up successful on paper and exhausted in real life.
Direction sits near the surface… but it shapes everything below.
In our Iceberg Accounting Tough Love 10 ElementsTM, DIRECTION sits near the surface.
That doesn’t make it unimportant. It gives meaning to everything underneath.
Profit without direction feels hollow.
Cash without direction feels anxious.
Numbers without direction feel noisy.
Profit without direction just becomes “how much more can I make?” A sustainably profitable business built on strong financial foundations, the right mix of team and with valued and well-served clients – that fit to your intentions…..that’s profit that can be enjoyed.
Cash without direction becomes fear-based hoarding or constant anxiety. Big cash ins spark joy but big cash outflows spark panic. Managing the cash within your business with intention ensures that everyone gets paid, plans get invested in and you receive the rewards for the time, stress and risks you take.
Numbers without direction become noise. There are so many numbers that can draw our focus, it is key to determine the true figures within a business that shape it and are fundamental to its success. And these aren’t just financials. They are a mix of aspects like……team happiness, client feedback, repeat customers………Your businesses Key Performance Indicators show IF you are moving with intentional momentum
When direction is clear, decisions get easier.
⭐ You know which opportunities to say yes to… and which to walk away from.
⭐ You know whether growth is actually serving you… or just stretching you thinner.
⭐ You know what you’re optimising for.
The danger of default direction and meaningless momentum.
Here’s the thing most business owners don’t realise. If you don’t choose a direction, the business will choose one for you. Usually that looks like…
❌ Staying with the same clients because it’s familiar
❌ Accepting work that doesn’t really fit anymore
❌ Growing because “that’s what you’re meant to do”
❌ Delaying decisions because there’s no clear reference point
That’s not a lack of ambition.
It’s a lack of intention.
And it keeps people stuck in businesses that technically work… but don’t really work for them.
A simple but uncomfortable January question…
If nothing changed this year…
Same clients.
Same workload.
Same pressure.
Same take-home pay.
Would you genuinely be happy?
If the answer is “not really”, that’s not a failure. It’s information. And information is exactly what direction gives you.
Why direction comes before numbers
This might sound strange coming from accountants, but it’s true. We don’t believe numbers should come first.
They matter. Deeply. But without direction, they don’t guide… they confuse. Once direction is clear, numbers become useful.
They help you and the team…
⭐ Test whether your goals are realistic
⭐ Decide where to focus effort
⭐ Spot what needs to change
⭐ Measure progress that actually matters
Direction tells the numbers what to do. Not the other way around.
Setting your own version of good and great, is fundamental to knowing if the momentum is moving in the right direction.
A final thought before you rush into planning
You don’t need a better to-do list. You need a clearer answer to the question:
What am I building this business for… really?
But a word of warning… direction doesn’t remove hard work. It makes the hard work worthwhile.
And it’s the foundation everything else sits on.
